Not long ago I was at the dawn service in Melbourne and I saw the carpets of Red poppies lining St Kilda Road on the way to the Shrine of Remembrance. It was remarkable on so many levels. There was a sense of the time, effort and care taken by so many people to respect the fallen.
Then there was the reaction of people seeing them all laid out. For some that was more visual than emotional; the children who grew up without parents or grandparents who served or tourists who don’t have that emotional connection either. For me they were both visually and emotionally powerful.
I came across this tree in a smaller town almost a month later. Fewer poppies yet just as strong.
